MyGovernment portal wins Global ICT Award (Malaysia)

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s MyGovernment portal beat about 70 others around the world to take the top prize in its category in the 2008 Global ICT Awards.
The portal (www.gov.my) links more than 900 public sector websites at federal, state and local levels, as well as delivers government services to citizens.
This is the first time Malaysia has won in the Global ICT Awards, which is held every two years and this year’s is the fourth in the series.
MyGovernment was an initiative spearheaded in 2003 by the Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (Mampu), a unit in the Prime Minister’s Department.
It won in the public sector award category. The award was presented at the World Congress on Information Technology (WCIT) 2008 gala dinner at the Putra World Trade Centre on Tuesday night.
Association of the Computer and Multimedia Industry of Malaysia (Pikom) council member Looi Kien Leong presented the award to Mampu director-general Datuk Normah Mohd Yusof. Also present was George Newstrom, outgoing Witsa chairman.
The most popular services on the MyGovernment portal are accessing government tenders, checking employment prospects in government agencies, renewing a driving licence, paying a traffic summons, registering a business, and filing an income tax return electronically.
Nor Aliah Mohd Zahri, deputy director-general of ICT at Mampu, said 1,174 online services and 3,749 downloadable forms are available at the portal.
“Also, the number of visitors to the portal has increased almost threefold in two years,” she said. The portal had 6.5 million visitors as at May 15, according to Mampu.
WCIT 2008, which ends today is organised by the Multimedia Development Corp and Pikom, with support from the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry.
